History of Cottonwood Park

Cottonwood Park (originally known as Richardson Park) was originally a 66-acre urban park in Dallas, Texas. The land for the park was donated by George W. Bush and his wife Barbara in 1989 and officially opened on May 10 of that year.

The park is home to a variety of amenities including a baseball field, basketball courts, tennis courts, a skatepark, picnic areas, and a pond. It is also the site of numerous annual events such as the Cottonwood Park Festival and 4th of July fireworks show.

How to get to Cottonwood Park

Getting to Cottonwood Park can be difficult, depending on where you’re coming from. From Dallas, take I-35 north to Exit 452 (Richardson). Take Highway 114 east to Highway 121 south. Follow Highway 121 south until it intersects with Highway 128. Turn left onto Highway 128 and drive 8 miles to Cottonwood Park Drive. The park is on the right.

Alternatively, if you’re coming from Fort Worth, take I-30 west to Exit 488 (Richardson). Take Highway 114 east to Highway 121 south. Follow Highway 121 south until it intersects with Highway 128. Turn left onto Highway 128 and drive 8 miles to Cottonwood Park Drive. The park is on the right.

What to do when you get to Cottonwood Park

When you arrive at Cottonwood Park, be sure to take in the views from the overlook. The park is home to several hiking trails, including the Richardson Mountain Trail, which will take you up to an unsurpassed lookout over downtown Richardson and the Dallas skyline.
