The History of Old City Park

The land that would become Old City Park was first surveyed in 1849 by John Neely Bryan, a surveyor and early settler of Dallas. The land was then known as Bryan’s Addition to Dallas. In 1871, the city of Dallas bought the land from Bryan and named it City Park. The park initially consisted of just a few acres of oak-lined ponds and rolling green hills. In 1911, the city built several pavilions and gardens, including the Japanese Garden and the Conservatory. In 1936, the park was renamed Old City Park in honor of Dallas’ oldest neighborhood, Old City. The park’s popularity as a recreation destination led to its further development in the 1940s and 1950s with additions such as an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a golf course, and a zoo.
